Installing Skype by design uninstalls Windows Live Messenger. Shortcuts to Windows Live Messenger will no longer be functional. Use of Windows Live Messenger is no longer possible since access to the backend server (logon) has been discontinued.

By default unless changed by the user received pictures/vidoes are stored in
C:\Users\\Documents\My Received Files\

Sent files (pictures/videos) should still be present in the original location that they were previously saved (e.g. My Pictures folder)

Messenger stored other data files (only capable to be used by Messenger but not Skype) in a folder called ObjectStore.
– These data files will remain after upgrading to Skype but no longer usable since only Messenger could access them
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\\ObjectStore

Messenger History files (i.e. records of previous conversations if history/conversation saving was enabled) are stored as *.xml files and by default (if not changed by the user) in:
C:\Users\\Documents\My Received Files\ [where xxxxxxxxxxx is a randomly generated number]. Windows is still capable of opening xml files, Skype is not.

If you do not use Windows Live Messenger their is no reason to upgrade. If Messenger is installed and no need for its replacement Skype, Messenger can be uninstalled.

Hello Nicole,
Hotmail is a web based email account, Live Messenger is a desktop Instant Messaging client. The End of Service for Live Messenger does not impact use of a Hotmail account for other services.
Additionally, a Hotmail account automatically is closed after 365 days of inactivity. For the first 270 days of inactivity, the account remains available for use (usage during that 270 days restarts the counter at zero)
